ST IRENE'S DAY CARE CENTRE PDF E-mail

After Irene Mudenyo found an abandoned baby in her sugarcane plantation on her farm in 2001 in Musanda, a small village outside Mumias, in western Kenya, she decided to look after the baby whom she named Moses.  See full story on home page.

This gave birth to the Noah’s Ark Day Care Centre in Mumias that now supports over 100 HIV Orphans.

However, Irene was still concerned with the number of orphans in her village and, because of the distance between her village and Mumias, the orphans in Musanda could not attend the Noah’s Ark Day Care Centre.  So Irene decided to set up a day care centre in her own home to support the orphans in Musanda.  She started this centre in April 2006 with 14 orphans.

St Irenes Day Care Centre

The Nasio Trust UK decided to support the new day care centre by providing food and medical cover and also paying for a teacher, a nurse and a cook.  Then, in 2006, a group of young people from Berinsfield, UK travelled to Kenya to design and build a temporary day care centre next to Irene's house.  This project was managed by Irene herself until 2007 when she was taken ill with cancer.  She died on 16 December 2007 leaving the centre with 37 children to support, two employed teachers, cook and a nurse.

Since her death the centre has been named in her honour St Irenes Day Care Centre.

Over the next two years funds were raised and a purpose-built centre was constructed.  The new St Irene's Day Care Centre  officially opened on 25 November 2009 and now cares for 69 children with the capacity to support up to 200 as and when funds become available to enrol new children.  Click here to see pictures from the official opening of the centre attended by children, parents, local public figures and UK sponsors.

In order to achieve this ambition, The Nasio Trust needs your help.  Funds are needed for:

Classroom equipment - desks and chairs for teachers and children, books, cupboards for storage, teachers salaries and training costs

Many of our children are supported by the general funds raised by The Nasio Trust.  As more and more child sponsors sign up The Nasio Trust is able to welcome new children to the centre and invest in further projects.

We can never thank this kind lady enough for the legacy she has left behind.  For us as a charity now the challenge has only just began.  How can we carry on with this work?  How can we make sure these children fulfil their dreams?
