Nasio’s Bike Project
May 2021

Nasio’s Bike Project, which is funded by the Sefton family, has provided engaging life skills activities for our young people.

The Nasio Bike Hub was set up in the renovated original Noah’s Ark building. It offers a great way for young people to learn and develop new skills, as well as providing a safe place for them to meet. The bike repair training started in June 2000 and many of our future young engineers now have valuable skills that could enable them to earn a living in future.

The young people are enjoying gaining skills in an area which interests them and are also saving money as they can now repair their bikes themselves. The rest of the children are also benefiting from the number of well-maintained bikes available which help to develop their motor skills.

Nasio is so grateful to the Sefton family who had the inspired idea to open the Bike Hub, and who have funded the project, including the salary for a mechanic. The future plan is to open a Bike shop, and for the Bike Hub to become an income generating project.

Case Study: Meet Kelvin

Meet 17 year old Kelvin Wepo (pictured in lilac), who lives in the Shitukhumi village of Mumias town. He has lived with a guardian since 2017, after the death of his mother. Kelvin’s father died in 2004 a road accident.

Kelvin enrolled in the bicycle class in June 2020 after the closure of the schools due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Since then he has gained many new skills and can now repair bicycles.

He is a grade seven pupil in Mumias Township Primary School. Kelvin is now back at school to continue with his primary education following the pandemic school closure. He is very optimistic that during the school holidays he will be able to learn more technical bicycle skills so that he can repair bicycles and earn some income.

Kelvin is very optimistic that in future he will be able to open a bicycle shop. He likes reading story books, playing football and listening to music.
